(La Fonera +)?
Connect the Fonera to your modem
or router like this:
Then connect the power supply to the Fonera and wait for it to update
it’s firmware. It may take up to 45 minutes.
Now please look for the “Wireless Network Connection” icon if your
computer is running on Windows system, or look for the airport icon if
you are using Mac. You’ll find two new WiFi networks: “FON_AP” and
“MyPlace”.
Network manager for Windows and MAC.
Connect to the FON_AP signal to register your Fonera. Consult “How do I
register La Fonera (La Fonera +) router?” 3.1.

1.2. How do I plug La Fonera?
Connect the La Fonera to your
modem or router like this:
Then connect the power supply to the Fonera and wait for it to update
it’s firmware. It may take up to 45 minutes.

1.3. I don’t have a free port to
connect La Fonera, what can I do?
You have to possibilities to get
FON going. Your 1st option is that you will have to plug a switch to
your modem or router, and then you will be able to connect all your
devices at once.
The 2nd option is that you disconnect the current cable from the
occupied plug, connect your La Fonera to a plug that has been in use on
your modem and connect the formally connected PC or notebook or other
device via WiFi to the Internet.(PPPoE, static IP)
1.4. La Fonera+ has two ports,
how do I plug it?
The white port (WAN) to your modem
or router
The black port (LAN) to your computer or any other network device you
want to connect via cable (optional)

1.5. Could my cable be defective?
Make sure that you hear a “click”
when you plug each end of the cable.
When a network cable is connected from a powered-on modem to La Fonera,
the WAN or the Internet LED should be lit or start to blink.

1.6. None of the LED lights are
lit; is my La Fonera broken?
First, try to find out if the
power supply isn’t defective (perhaps a friend has a measuring tool),
then contact us using the contact form of this page.

How to CONNECT:
2.1. Why do I have to wait for
up to 45mins?
The La Fonera router will be
updating its firmware right after being connected to the Internet for
the first time. It is not common for the Fonera to take the full 45
minutes to update, however, we advice you to wait for this period of
time without disconnecting it. As soon as the FON_AP Signal is showing
up constantly, you are ready to register it.
2.2. I can see the FON_AP
Signal, what do I have to do now?
Now that your La Fonera router has
finished updating its firmware, you can connect to the FON_AP WiFi
signal in order to register your router and become a
real Fonero.
2.3. What do the LEDs stand for?
Power: La Fonera is ON
Internet/WAN: La Fonera is properly connected to a modem/routeur
LAN: La Fonera is properly connected to network device

(we will do a picture explaining each comportment)
2.4. How to configure PPPoE/PPTP
mode on La Fonera?

connect to the MyPlace Signal, open your browser and type
http://192.168.10.1 and the console will be loaded. The standard
username and password are “admin” and “admin”.
Go to “Advanced”, then “Internet Connection“, and then change the
“Mode” option to PPPoE/PPTP. Finally enter the email address and
password provided by your ISP and submit the changes. You will need to
reboot La Fonera for the changes to take effect.
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to do this:
ADD PPPoE Flash
2.5. I have only one LAN port on
my modem
If it is already used, you will have to plug a switch to your modem or
router, and then you will be able to connect all your devices at once.
2.6. Is there something special
with my ISP?
Most Internet Service Providers
have the same setup. Nevertheless, there might be recurring issues with
certain ISPs when you try to connect your Fonera. You should check out
our Wiki to see whether there is something special to configure with
your ISP:
[link to right wiki section]
2.7. I have an internet acces
with a cable provider, anything special I have to do?
If you have a cable modem or router, you should power off both the
cable router and La Fonera, wait 15 to 30 minutes, then power on La
Fonera first, and lastly the cable modem.
If 45 minutes later you are still not detecting the public FON_AP WiFi
signal you should check out our Wiki:
[link to right wiki section]
2.8. I have a special network
setup here. How do I connect my La Fonera with it?
If your have to setup some special
things before your computer is able to access the internet through your
network, then the La Fonera might have to be setup with the same
settings. The standard setting with the La Fonera is DHCP
Get into the management console: connect to the MyPlace, open your
browser and type http://192.168.10.1 and the console will be loaded.
The standard username and password is “admin” and “admin”.
Go to “Advanced” then “Internet Connection“ and change the “Mode”
option to ‘Static. Finally enter the parameters that you get from the
former device connected, or your system administrator. If other
settings are required for conneting a network device, please consult
your IT administrator aor a friend who could help.
You will need to reboot the La Fonera so that the changes take effect.

2.9. The WiFi connections gets
cut off quite often, what can I do about it?
In this case, we suggest that you
change the WiFi channel on which the Fonera is emitting by following
these instructions
You might also want to check that there are no known issues with your
WiFi card
[link to wiki WiFi card compatibility section] or device.
[link to wiki device compatibility section]
2.10. Could a firewall/antivirus
protection kit impact FON?
Some antivirus or firewall
software might prevent you from connecting to the FON public signal.
They do so as they prevent your from connecting to non-WPA/WEP
encrypted conections. If you notice that deactivating your security kit
allows you to connect, then you should check this page in order to
configure your software correctly.

How to REGISTER:
3.1. How do I register La Fonera(La Fonera +) router?
Connect to the public WiFi signal
(It begins by ‘FON_’). If you see the ‘MyPlace’ signal but not the
‘FON_AP‘ signal, please check ‘Why only MyPlace WiFi signal is
visible?’ entry for assistance. Open your browser (IE,
Firefox, Opera…) and enter any website, i.e. www.wikipedia.org as a
destination address. You’ll be forwarded to the FON access portal that
looks like this:
Log in with your FON account (email and password) and you will see a
form to register your access point. If you do not have a FON account
already, please sign up for a free FON account on the access portal or
here. The register form
looks like this:
If instead you are asked to purchase day passes then please consult the
“Why am I requested to purchase a day pass while trying to register La
Fonera (La Fonera+)?” entry. Select your country, region, etc. You can use the map to drag and drop
the FON Spot exactly where it is. This is actually great to precicly
place your FON Router – and in addition it will be placed immediately
on the FON Maps.

3.2. My FON Spot is not shown on
the map
Normally it can take up to 24
hours before your spot is shown on the FON Maps. If your FON Spot is not shown on the map after
registering your La Fonera, please do the following: Login on fon.com,
then go to ‘Configure your FON Router’ Drag and drop the FON Spot
exactly where it is.
Don’t forget to save the changes

3.3. I have modified some
setting for my router, but nothing has changed
If you have modified the router
settings on www.fon.com, it may take up to 24 hours for changes
to be effectives. If you want them to be applied right away, rebooting
your La Fonera might help.
You need to register your router
on your account in order to get the free roaming. If you get this
message it means that no FON Router is associated to your account you
are logging in with. Hence the system thinks that you are an ‘Alien’.
Another Fonero might have logged into your public WiFi signal (FON_AP)
before yourself which will then cause the router to be associated with
his or her FON account. If you believe that this might have happend,
please get in contact with us using this web form.
3.5. Why is only MyPlace WiFi
signal visible?
The La Fonera FON WiFi Router has
two different WiFi signals, one is the private signal (MyPlace) and the
other is the public signal (FON_AP). To only be able to see the MyPlace
Signal means that your La Fonera cannot get full access to the
Internet:
If your modem is using PPPoE or PPTP, then please consult the ‘How to
configure PPPoE/PPTP mode on La Fonera?” entry.
If you have a cable ISP, please check the ‘I have a cable ISP, anything
special to do?” entry. If your router or your network does not automatically give an IP adress
to your computer (DHCP service), you should check the ‘I have a special
network here, how do I connect La Fonera?’ entry.
If none of the reasons above seem to fit your case, you should check
fon.com to see whether there is something special you need to do to
configure with your ISP: FON ISP Friends
